Adding Different Place Values

Example: Add the value the \(7\) represents with the value the \(5\) represents. \[4,765\]

Solution: The \(7\) is in the hundreds place. It represents \(700.\) The \(5\) is in the ones place. It represents \(5.\) Adding the values they represent gives \[700 + 5 = 705\]

Subtracting Different Place Values

Example: Subtract the value the \(4\) represents from the value the \(2\) represents. \[2,048\]

The \(2\) is in the thousands place. It represents \(2,000.\) The \(4\) is in the tens place. It represents \(40.\) Subtracting the \(40\) from the \(2,000\) gives \[2,000 - 40 = 1,960\]
